Brain Waves and Late Alarms

Every once in a while my brain beats my alarm clock at waking me up. Super weird but I’ll open my eyes…well at lest one of them… reach over to check the time, and sure enough…(Like clock work) the alarm goes off a minute or two later. I’m sure that happens to a lot of us out there, but when you really stop and think about it, it’s a bit strange. Our bodies end up syncing with a device that was programmed to wake us up. For that minute or two I’m left wondering how connected our lives have become to technology without even noticing it.
That simple moment is usually how my day with digital media begins. Before I even get out of bed, my phone is already involved. Digital media follows me from that moment on. I like that it helps me stay connected, which can easily turn to distraction. We love our reels, right?
Speaking of, platforms like Instagram has introduced me to endless scrolling and sometimes hard laughter from its trendy content that’s shared. Even just scrolling to see what friends are up to can led down a rabbit hole. My career is in property management and I am in the leasing and marketing department. So you can imagine how important it is that I study how brands present themselves and use these platforms to reach audiences. The visuals, captions, and short videos all play a role in how businesses tell their story. Our favorite reels know just how to grab our attention quickly and keep it. Maybe because they’re short, engaging, and easy to watch. Nevertheless, it’s interesting to see how companies use creativity to connect with people rather than just pushing advertisements.
Another platform I find myself on often is good old YouTube. The king source of “How To videos”. Outside of tutorials, reviews, and behind-the-scenes moments, I’m actually using it now to tighten up my Spanish. From a marketing perspective, it’s also a place where businesses can build trust by showing how their products or services actually work. Think about it, when we subscribe to channels, it’s almost like checking in on a friend.
Most of the time, my reaction to digital media is positive because let’s face it, it’s everywhere and if you can’t beat them, join the, right? Now back to my alarm clock. It’s those moments that make me lay there and think….is this really happening? Do we rely on technology more than we actually need to? Digital media is powerful, but learning to be intentional about how much time we give it is probably the real challenge.
